A HEATED bidding war between a South Australian buyer and Chinese representative Carpen- ter International over yearling bull Paringa Judd J5 pushed prices to $36,000 at the Lawsons Angus on-farm production sale at Glenburn, Victoria, on Friday.

This topped a full clearance of 230 bulls which averaged $5358, plus a full clearance of 190 females which topped at $5000 and averaged $2397.
The yearling sale topper, together with the second highest-priced bull at $35,000, was knocked down to Western Australia-based Carpenter International.
Judd J5, named after AFL player Chris Judd, was bred by Tom Lawson of Paringa Livestock and recorded a long-fed index of 169 and calving ease direct (CED) of +2.6, putting him as one of the highest ranked bulls in the Angus breed.
Judd was also in the top one per cent for eye muscle area at +8.1 and a 600-day growth figure of +113.
Lawsons stud principal Harry Lawson regarded Judd as a "unique individual boasting a balance of numbers and phenotype".
The second-highest priced bull was 18-month-old Lawson Incredible HA03, a son of Ayrvale Bartel.
From Lawsons Dinky Di E447, Incredible was the number one ranked bull in Lawson's 18-month-old sale bulls for Long fed/CAAB $Index at +160, another selling point being its +10 EMA figure.
The bull was in the top 5pc for IMF and CED, with figures of +3.3pc and +4.2 respectively.
Carpenter International bought five bulls at the sale to average $22,900.
These bulls will enter quarantine for semen collection for export to China for major feedlot operator Kingbull Livestock.
All up, the Lawsons Angus sale achieved a total clearance of 230 bulls for an average of $5358, while 190 females sold to $5000 to average $2397 - a result that pleased Mr Lawson.
Ayrvale Bartel was also the sire of one of the highest priced females on offer, Lawsons Bartel E7 H108, at $5000, while another female, Lawsons Ambassador J1227, sold at $5000.
Mr Lawson said 80 Bartel E7 sons sold to average $6050 and grossed $484,000.
Major buyers included Peddue Partnership, Flinders Island, which bought seven bulls to average $4785, and Grant Hall, Flinders Island, who bought six to average $4100.
In the female section Carpenter International was a major buyer of 21 females to average $2210 and John Daniels, King Island, Tasmania, bought nine to average $2250.
