All money raised by the fee, known as a fishing licence, is placed into the Recreational Fishing Trusts which is spent on improving recreational fishing in NSW.
These trusts are regulated by law and overseen by two committees - one for saltwater and one for freshwater - made up of recreational fishers.
Once fishers have paid the fee, it is essential to carry a receipt showing the payment of the fee.
Fishing licences apply when spear fishing, hand lining or gathering, trapping, bait collecting and prawn netting or when in possession of fishing gear in, on or adjacent to waters.
People under the age of 18 are exempt from paying the fee.
Licence fees can be purchased for any time frame from three days to three years and can be purchased online or by phone from hundreds of standard and gold fishing fee agents, from some service stations or fishing stores and from most Kmart stores in NSW.
Fishing closures, bag and fish size limits and legislation apply to all fishing activities and should be checked before fishing.
