A LONG career as a truckie proved perfect inspiration for Mick Pollard and his wife Sal.

The couple opened a takeaway shop in the small town of Peak Hill, north of Parkes along the Newell Highway, late last year.
As a truckie, Mick recognised a need for more facilities for truck drivers which included operating all through the night and offering sit-down meals.
"Along the Newell Highway between Gilgandra and Forbes there isn't much in the way of places for a truckie to pull up and have a feed and a shower," Mick said.
"All the truckies are saying truck stops along that stretch are virtually non-existent."
Mick and Sal's 24/7 Takeaway, located in the main street of Peak Hill, does just that.
With six staff on, Mick said three manned the night shift while the other three were on during the day, allowing the kitchen to stay open all night long, 365 days a year.
The takeway even ran through the Christmas period, the same as it would any other day.
"We shut for one hour during the day for some Christmas time as a family but that was it," Mick said.
Although the takeaway is in the main street of town, Mick said drivers could park the trucks only 50 metres down the street and walk to the shop.
Mick said he made "a mean hamburger" which had turned out to be the most popular item on the menu so far.
"We do coffees - the works," he said.
