The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has advised severe heatwave conditions are becoming more extensive to include much of inland Victoria, southern NSW, southern South Australia and part of the eastern interior of Western Australia on Thursday.
The BOM forecast for Friday and Saturday has the severe conditions spreading further North and West into the state.
Temperatures in the 40s are forecast from Wagga Wagga and Deniliquin in the South, through to Riverina centres of Griffith and Hay, to Cobar and Broken Hill in the West and by Sunday the heatwave is scheduled to reach Bourke in the North.
Weatherzone have also warned of heatwave conditions, issuing a statement about the impact on the dam levels across NSW.
"Several waves of heat that have passed across NSW this summer have taken their toll on water levels in the State's dams," Weatherzone advised.
A combination of evaporation, low rainfall and increased use means water levels have dropped, though the State Water Corporation says the situation is not critical.
Communications manager for State Water Tony Webber says a combination of good management from the authority and a more conservative approach by irrigators means the situation is not as bad as it could be.
Mr Webber says the dams in the north of the state are experiencing the greatest pressure.
"We'd like to see some inflow, but the situation is manageable."
NSW Health advises people over 75, infants and people with medical conditions such as heart disease should take extra care in conditions of severe heat.
