FOR Steve and Steph Rhind "Coolreagh" at Yerra, west of Maryborough, the addition of Simmental content three years ago has added up to an average 25 kilograms extra on weaners and has also brought other marketing advantages.

The Rhinds run 350 Droughtmaster breeders on 800 hectares of pastures improved with bluegrass and legumes which are rotationally grazed with cattle shifted every ten to 14 days.
They traditionally used Droughtmaster or Brahman bulls but decided to trial Simmentals chasing weight gain, depth and a more "blocky" calf with the hybrid vigour the backgrounders who source their weaners were saying they wanted.
Since the introduction, they've lifted the weights in six to ten month weaners to about 280kg.
"The calves are born slightly smaller but grow so much quicker and when weaned we've also found improvements in temperament," said Mr Rhind, pictured.
"The crossbred weaners are very consistent in weights, size and style and flat backs and buyers definitely chase that consistent line and pay a premium for it."
