WHILE Bring Me The Maid may do what his Widden stud-based sire Sebring did in 2008, (winning the $3.5 million Golden Slipper-G1) at Rosehill this Saturday, Irish raider Gordon Lord Byron signalled his force as a contender in the multi-million dollar The Championships at Randwick on April 12 and 19.

Gordon Lord Byron won the Australian Turf Club (ATC) George Ryder Stakes-G1 (1500 metres) at Rosehill last Saturday which got world attention as the six-year-old is an Irish-bred and trained galloper, who is now aiming for a start in either the $3m Doncaster Mile (1600m) or the $2.5m T J Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 12.
Touted as "racing's grand finals", the ATC's The Championships is a $20m gamble set to put the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on the world stage, with Gordon Lord Byron and trainer Tom Hogan's efforts well received to get world headlines particularly in the United Kingdom.
A large Irish contingent was on hand including a cheering crew from Coolmore stud from Jerrys Plains at Rosehill last Saturday to help celebrate the Irish Group One raid.
A galloper that has already raced in England, Ireland, France, Dubai, Hong Kong and now Australia, Gordon Lord Byron is by little known Great Britain sire Byron, a dual Group Two winner in England (and French Group One placed) who is by Danzig's Green Desert, sire also of former noted shuttlers Cape Cross and Invincible Spirit.
From humble beginnings the gelding has won 10 races and $1.8m for his Irish owners.
