Yet Mr Hegarty, Carrabar Angus, Meandarra, was so impressed with a particular bull on offer at the Sydney Angus Bull and Female sale he could not go home without it.
He was so keen to add the bull to his herd, he bid to the top bull price of the day.
Not being familiar with this particular sale before attending the Sydney Royal Show, he was glad he attended given the opportunity to purchase such a good quality bull at a competitive price.
Mr Hegarty purchased K.O. Premier Bull Durham G152, from K.O. Angus, Kangaloon, for $8500.
Impressed with the sale last year, Mr Hegarty (pictured with the bull and K.O. Angus stud manager Tim Lord) will not only be showing cattle at this year's Sydney Royal, but he will also be a first-time vendor at the sale, after being a first-time buyer last year.
"I will be selling four lots of embryos at this year's sale," Mr Hegarty said.
He said the sale attracted a wide pool of buyers from across NSW and beyond.
He said a key reason behind his purchase last year was the bull's mother, Vermont Dream Y031, a proven performer in the breed.
