So many growers are attempting to cash-in on the boom that phytopthora-resistant rootstock on which to grow primarily Hass varieties, is in serious short supply.
For Mr Tyas, the pressing issue is making sure market demand keeps pace with supply. At this stage he is quietly confident of that outcome.
Current national harvest is 60,000 tonnes with less than five per cent exported to the open markets of Malaysia and Singapore. By 2025 the harvest is forecast to reach 100,000 tonnes and Mr Tyas expects export fruit fly issues to be resolved by then.
