A ewe called a powerhouse by judges has dominated the horned fine-medium sashes, with Victoria Downs four-tooth entry taking home reserve grand champion ewe.

Under judges Joe Van Eyk, Shalimar Park, Walcha, Max Wilson, Wilgunyah, Dirrabondi, Queensland, Peter Capel, “Bungulla”, Manilla, and Paul Meyer, Mulloorie stud, Brinkworth, South Australia, it was a tough tussle between the superfine and fine-medium entries for the top title.
Victoria Downs, Merino stud, Morven, Queensland, took home one of the top accolades for their four-tooth and under class winning ewe, who also took out the champion fine-medium ewe sash.
It carried a 18.7-micron-fleece, 2.5-micron-standard-deviation (SD), a 13.4 per cent coefficient of variation (CV) and a 99.9pc comfort factor (CF).
Judge, Joe Van Eyk, Shalimar Park, Walcha, said Victoria Downs should be commended on their exceptional ewe.
“She is a very nice ewe and really productive,” Mr Van Eyk said.
“If you stand in front of her and look straight at her, she is a real powerhouse of a ewe.
“She really has got such a presence but on the day it was the superfine who managed to just get over her that little bit.”
Earlier in the judging, Glendonald Merino stud, Nhill, Victoria, was sashed August-shorn champion ram for their six-tooth class winner, with reserve awarded to Nerstane, Woolbrook.
