Gunnedah's grand tomato championship has run for more than 30 years, with Ron Fuller a keen contender, but a lack of enthusiasm has cruelled the event two years in a row.
For more than 30 years Gunnedah was home to the giant tomato, celebrated the first week in January with the National Tomato Day, hosted by the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club.
But sadly the competition – which attracted fruit up to 1.5kg – has languished in recent years with only one entrant in 2015. It was cancelled last year and will not be held this year either, according to club secretary manager Mark Bannerman.
“We spent a lot of money promoting the event but failed to attract entries.”
