The sale drew bidders from across a wide area of SA, as well as interstate interest.
An average of $8361 was achieved, which was $1418 up on last year. There was almost total clearance, with 65 out of 66 bulls offered sold.
Last year’s joint top-price bidder Neil Engler, Bengalee Angus, Maaoupe, near Penola, SA, also took home this year’s highest price bull. Black Angus Hans L229 was catalogued at lot 39, but he was offered after lot 2, because of the strong interest in the sire before the sale.
Bidding kicked off at $10,000, before finishing with Mr Engler at $19,000.
While Hans was only a May 2015-drop, it weighed in at 824 kilograms. The young sire also boasted impressive Angus Australia Breedplan figures, coming in the top five per cent of the breed for positive rump fat and scrotal size, and the top 10pc for calving ease, positive rib fat and 600-day growth. It was sired by Willow Fields Hans H37 and its dam was Black Angus Wamalta J267.
The second highest price bull was Black Angus Fig Jam L45, a 22.5-month-old bull that weighed 878kg.
It was knocked down to Gavin O’Brien, Gilmandyke Angus, Orange.
The bull measured in the top 1pc of the breed for 400-day growth and scrotal size, in the top 5pc for 200 and 600-day growth and in the top 10pc for docility.
Volume buyers included Chesrex, Kingston, with six bulls to $12,000 twice, Mark Wheal, Wheal Farms, Beachport, with five bulls to $7000 and Mike Famulano, Golden Triangle, Mount Gambier, with four to $14,000.
Ben and Samantha Glatz were extremely pleased with the sale result. “The sale was so strong on the back of the genuine performance and market suitability that our bulls offer our commercial clients,” Mr Glatz said.
The sale was conducted jointly by Landmark and Elders.
