Most farmers would like their soils to have a strong, healthy microflora to improve soil fertility, crop yields and water holding capacity.
However, a high proportion of farmed land does not have soil microflora that fits this description.
Improving these soils is a long term project but, some of the benefits of a healthy soil microflora can be gained by application of microbial inoculums.
Mapleton Agri Biotec’s recommendation for farmers wanting to improve nitrogen nutrition in their crops is an application of NitroGuard, which contains nitrogen fixing microbes.
The microbes do not fix massive amounts of nitrogen, but they supply it steadily through the season and supply it directly into the crop roots so it is all captured.
NitroGuard microbes also produce auxins (plant growth regulators) which drive development of a bigger secondary root system that captures more of any applied nitrogen fertiliser.
This improves nitrogen use efficiency and allows a decrease in the nitrogen fertiliser rate.
For growers wanting to improve phosphorous nutrition, Mapleton recommend CataPult Superfine which they have reformulated into a highly concentrated form to allow application via fertigation or direct inject systems.
CataPult is based on Mapleton’s Release and Catch system in which phosphorous solubilising microbes make soil phosphorous more available.
In Australian summers this can be a valuable tool to get good yields in varied seasons.
