Matthew and Cherrie Coddington offered 160 Merino and Poll Merinos at their Glenwood property, Dubbo, NSW.
The draft averaged $2168 and topped at $7000 – paid by Steve and Julie Symons, Lemani Merino stud, Ashford, NSW, who also bought the top-priced ram last year.
This year’s sale topper was a 117-kilogram, 16 month-old son of Roseville Park RP10-0038. Its wool measured 17.1 micron with a standard deviation (SD) of 2.9M, coefficient of variation (CV) of 17 per cent and a comfort factor (CF) of 99.9pc. He has an eye muscle depth of 35 millimetres, a Merino production plus index (MP+) of 150, and fleece weight figure in the breed’s top 10pc.
“He is a big upstanding ram, a good body size and he had really nice wool, a big bold heavy cutting kind of sheep that we are looking for,” Mr Symons said.
“We are trying to increase our fleece weight and I know he will do that for us.”
The Symons bought two more rams with their draft av $4416.
There were two rams who claimed the next top price of $5500. One was a 16 month-old, 117kg, ET son of W12-175 sold to the Doherty family, Toongi, NSW. The other, a 17 month-old twin who is growing 17.1M sold to Lingara Pty Ltd, Mockinya. Lingara’s draft of four rams av $3187. They also purchased 13 grade rams after the sale.
Repeat buyer Laurie Bullen, manager at Booroola, Avenel, was the biggest volume buyer, amassing a draft of 24, av $2416.
Booroola has been buying Roseville Park rams for about 24 years. They run about 5500 Merino ewes and are getting some big fleece weights with good lambing results using these rams. They also produce fat lambs with Suffolks.
“They do their job well, I like the evenness, the softness of the wool length of wool,” Mr Bullen said.
“They are good sized sheep with big weights of wool for the micron.”
Other volume buyers included the Gibbs family, Caniambo, with 10 rams, av $1750, and C Jarrett Pty Ltd, Ballyrogan, with eight rams, av $2062.
Roseville Park principal, Matthew Coddington thanked the stable client base’s support.
“We are now looking towards our Victorian sale in November where we will auction another 50 rams at Hamilton showgrounds.
“We will also be selling 450 grade rams over the next few months.”
