I really enjoy going to libraries and reading, so my dream career was to work in a library.
As a former student of Tara Anglican School, I decided to contact them and ask for an opportunity to volunteer.
Thankfully, they agreed and I began volunteering in the junior school library.
At the beginning, I felt shy, but Chris and Gwyn, my supervisors, were very kind to me.
They were patient when they showed me new tasks and always offered a helping hand.
After some time, I was offered a volunteer role at the senior school library every Monday while also continuing to volunteer in the junior school library every Tuesday and Wednesday.
I decided to be courageous and give it a go, so I accepted.
There was a lot to learn with my new role, but I continued to persevere.
Thanks to the kindness of the senior library staff, I slowly began to be more confident with my tasks.
I was really enjoying working, so I contacted Ability Options seeking support in finding a paid role.
I told them about my volunteering at Tara Anglican School and they were really impressed with my consistency and work ethic.
Ability Options held a meeting with the school about giving me a paid one-year contract doing the same work I did as a volunteer and the school agreed. When the contract ended, Tara continued to keep me as a paid casual employee.
During my school term as a casual, the school offered me a permanent part-time job as a library clerical assistant, which I gladly accepted.
I was so happy when I received this offer. All my persistence had been worthwhile. I am and will always be grateful to Ability Options and Tara Anglican School for giving me a chance and helping me achieve my dream job and for accepting me for who I am.
It’s an amazing feeling to feel included, to feel welcomed and to feel like you belong and that’s how I feel with the library team at Tara.
