WEANER steers sold from 310 to 330 cents a kilogram live and heifers 240c/kg to 255c/kg at the Inverell Premier Weaner Sale yesterday.
Selling agents, C.L. Squires auctioneer, Robbie Bloch said 3000 steers and 1000 heifers sold mainly to Queensland fatteners out to buy as many head they could to fill-up paddocks at the lighter dollar prices.
“They had a bit of weight as we had a great start to the season last year on the back end of winter and our cattle got heavy with a lot 300kgs-plus up to 360kg,” he said.
“However, the seasons have deteriorated and looking to be pretty tough so a lot of the vendors wanted the cattle gone and not return home, so unfortunately local support was very limited.
“But we are very fortunate here to be close enough to Queensland and those buyers were great to us.”
Mr Bloch said this was the second of their weaner sale series, the first a month ago.
Best of the Angus steers made 340c/kg on the lighter end with the heavier cattle still making 310c/kg to 330c/kg.
Euro-cross steers also with a lot of weight at 340kg to 350kg at the top end made 285c/kg to 300c/kg and an odd pen making 260c/kg or 270c/kg.
Mr Bloch said Angus heifers were making 240c/kg to 255c/kg most of the day.
“We got onto some really nice Euro heifers making 251c/kg to 252c/kg for well over 300kg and then the lighter cattle and regardless of breed were making 245c/kg to 255c/kg.
“But a terrific result for our calves and full credit goes to our clients for providing such a terrific yarding of cattle.
“We have another 3000 head in a fortnight and we are praying for a bit of rain to help us there.”
