He’s spent the past 17 years working with Charolais cattle, but David Smith, Ben Lomond will return to his roots, the Hereford breed, to judge at the 57th annual Herefords Australia National Show and Sale at Dubbo.
Mr Smith, the operations manager at one of the country’s leading Charolais studs, Palgrove, has been involved with whiteface cattle since the age of 16.
He’s worked on other people’s studs, but also formed his own, Kyan Poll Herefords, with his brother Neil, which Neil still runs.
Mr Smith has continued to follow the breed and over the years has judged at regional shows, with three of those being Poll Hereford feature shows.
He said he’d be looking for moderate frame, structural soundness and thickness in the bulls.
“This is the biggest Hereford event I’ve judged at, but I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
“I’ve shown cattle there for quite a few years myself, so it’s nice to return as a judge, for a breed that I was heavily involved in.”
