The Nationals have preselected 21-year-old mental health worker Yvette Quinn to take on the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party in the NSW seat of Orange.
The minor party wrestled the seat off the Nationals by a narrow margin following a by-election recount in late 2016.
It was the first time the Nationals had lost the electorate in almost 70 years.
Ms Quinn, who has an eight-generation connection to the region, grew up in Parkes and studied health science at the University of Sydney.
She currently works for Flourish Australia as a mental health support worker and has previously been involved with the Multicultural NSW Regional Advisory Council.
Ms Quinn identified some of her priorities as health services, mental health support and improvements to local roads.
"We currently have a government who has the ability and desire to invest in regional areas of NSW," she said in a statement on Saturday.
"We won't be able to get our fair share with someone who isn't at the decision-making table."
NSW Nationals Leader John Barilaro described Ms Quinn as "tenacious, hard-working and down to earth".
"I am excited to start working with Yvette who has shown she has the energy and drive and the right personal qualities to deliver for the people of this region," he said in a statement.
"Her work as a mental health support worker has seen her on the front lines looking after some of the most vulnerable in our community and it will put her in good stead for the upcoming campaign."
Deputy leader Niall Blair praised the 21-year-old's "fresh and enthusiastic approach".
The Nationals' 2016 loss in Orange followed months of unrest within the party after deputy premier Troy Grant was criticised for his backing of the now-scrapped greyhound racing ban.
Mr Grant stepped down as leader amid a primary vote swing in the seat, which the party previously held by a margin of more than 21 per cent.
Mr Barilaro said at the time there were lessons to be learnt from the "tough" result.
