Although the season has been tough Dorper prices have remained consistently strong in multi-vendor sales, regional Dorper sales and for prime lambs in the saleyards and over the hook.
The sucker lamb market is also a very profitable market with Dorpers and Dorpers finish quickly at a young age.
It’s in these dry times that Dorpers shine and the fact that they can reproduce when it’s tough and still raise a good lamb that’s a sellable product is where the Dorper Breed is a stand-out winner over all other sheep breeds.
Running Dorpers as a commercial prime lamb operation also makes it easier to make an Income when its dry as the running costs are considerably low compared to other sheep breeds as the need for crutching, shearing, fly strike are not applicable.
The higher quality Dorpers you run, the better quality the lamb becomes, and the higher yields you will achieve when you run your Dorpers as a maternal self-replacing flock.
Live export of good quality Dorpers to China, Russia and some other countries has been successful for some of our of larger scale Dorper breeders and is another market worth considering adding to your operation.
The national Dorper sale is coming up on September 4 and 5 and is a great place to see top quality Dorpers for sale and offers a broad range of quality Dorpers from many stud breeders for the stud and commercial Dorper market. Our national sale is a classed event so you can buy with peace of mind knowing that some quality control standards are in place.
There are various field days around NSW that feature Dorpers with breeders manning stands happy to help with questions associated with running Dorpers and can inform people of the great list of benefits that come with breeding Dorpers.
We have a great committee of volunteer Dorper breeders in the eastern region (NSW) that are actively promoting the Dorper and are looking at new ways of getting members opportunities to promote their sheep and further educate their newer members on the breed standards that are unique to the Dorper breed.
If you would like to have a say or learn more about the Dorper breed feel free to attend the next eastern region meeting which will be held at the national sale at Dubbo.
