Scholarships offer more than learning at MGGS

After studying at Warrnambool College, Ms Walker received a scholarship to attend Melbourne Girls Grammar in 1969.

She is now a Professor Emeritus of both Deakin University and the University of Melbourne.

In the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours list, she was made a Member of the Order of Australia General Division for service to the education sector through leadership and administrative roles, and to the law as an academic.

She served as the fifth Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University (2003–2010) and was the first woman to be appointed to the position, which is one of many highlights in an illustrious career.

Ms Walker has generously donated to the MGGS scholarship program:

“I was unbelievably fortunate to have been a student at Melbourne Girls Grammar and I would do anything for the school,” she said.

”I grew up in country Victoria. My father managed large farming properties and we moved many times.

“My parents wanted a stable school environment for me and my mother was a staunch admirer of Anglican institutions.

“She told me that she was attracted to the values and ideals of MGGS.

“My parents could not afford to send me to boarding school without the assistance of a scholarship.

“I won a scholarship to another boarding school, but my parents declined it in the hope that I might be awarded a scholarship to MGGS.

”I was awarded the Ruve Cutts Henderson Scholarship - an academic and boarding scholarship.

“I could not have attended MGGS were it not for the scholarship.” 

Ms Walker took a lot from her time at MGGS.

“I loved the sense of being educated,” she said.

“Being awarded the scholarship and my time at MGGS gave me a sense of confidence that I may not otherwise have had.”
