With parts of the state set to hit temperatures in the high 40s this week, some stud stock sales have been postponed for fears of heat stress on livestock.
Kentish Downs Poll Dorsets, Holbrook, postponed their dispersal sale from Thursday to Sunday, due to the implications heat would have while yarding their 800 ewes.
Local Land Services said stock could increase their water consumption by up to 80 per cent under extreme conditions with dry cattle needing up to 80 litres per day and an adult sheep up to six litres.
Signs of heat stress may include panting, salivating or grunting.
