BACK again in the state’s north last weekend was the Herefords Northern NSW Youth Group Heifer Show that welcomed over 80 competitors to the town of Inverell.

With cattle travelling from throughout Queensland and NSW, and even a competitor from Mt Riddock Station 200 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, it was sure to be a show-down between the Hereford breed’s best in the north.
Niaomi Evans from Nagol Park Shorthorns, Tamworth, awarded the overall grand champion parader sash to Riley Weller from Weller Brothers Poll Herefords, Toowoomba, Qld, following his win of the intermediate section.
Mr Weller overcame stiff competition from senior champion Beau White, Inverell, pee wee champion Bella Hannaford, and junior champion Mitchell Taylor, a first-time attendee of a youth show.
Rising to the top of the field for junior judging, overseen by judge Graham Jordan, Goonoo Red Angus Tamworth, was Will McLachlan, Inverell.
Senior competitor, Alecea Nixon, claimed grand champion herdsperson, while the Herefords Northern NSW Youth Group most potential breeder award was presented to Paul Murphy.
Tamworth local Jacinta Cooper was awarded Hereford breed ambassador while her older sister Sophie Cooper, secretary of the Herefords Northern NSW Youth Group, was named club person of the year.
In the cattle classes officiated by Roger Evans, Nagol Park Shorthorns, Drew and Riley Weller of Weller Brothers Poll Herefords, Toowoomba, Qld, wound up a successful show taking home intermediate and grand champion heifer with their foundation female Glenwarrah Lass N114, shown by Drew.
Riley along with Jorja Durkin exhibited by the champion futurity cow, Mountain Valley Favourite M091.
Junior champion heifer went to Chace Hannaford’s exhibit Tycolah Min P003 while champion bull was secured by Te-Angie Noah led by Taylor Hack.
In the steer section, Mitchell and Emily Taylor’s Hereford cross steers Sniper and Rocky claimed champion and reserve respectively.
On top of the competitions offered at this year’s camp, competitors were also treated to an array of educational talks including; meat science, show products and cattle preparation, livestock maketing and photography, and cattle scanning.
