Farmers across parts of the northern Riverina and south-west slopes are today assessing damage caused by the storm cell which passed through their properties during late Tuesday afternoon and causing untold damage to livestock and property.
The storm was so virulent in parts, it seems only a matter of small distance where some properties would receive a reasonable amount of rain, while close by enormous falls caused considerable damage.
In the Young district, Kate Sevier who lives opposite the airport on the north side of town reports measuring 100 mls (four inches) falling in under two hours, tearing up farm roads and ripping fences to shreds allowing stock to roam.
Ms Sevier has heard of 200 cattle missing from one of her neighbour’s paddocks, with stockmen on horseback scanning the area searching for them.
Yet at Bribbaree (50kms west), nothing was recorded.
South of Young up to 20mls were recorded, whilst further south between Jugiong and Harden in a narrow band, one property received 176mls in 40 minutes causing damage to trees, sheds and infrastructure along with livestock.
Tom Corkhill, Corkhills Ag Service, Boorowa reports the Boorowa River has broken its banks through the town where 80 to 100mls measured east of the town with falls of 60 to 70 mls around the area common.
A lot of trees where torn to shreds in narrow bands through the southwest slopes, while farmers in those areas are now assessing damage to infrastructure.
