A classy display of Poll Dorsets were presented during the 2019 Royal Canberra Show before judge Marshall Douglas, Abelene Park Poll Dorsets, Woolamin.
The champion ram was exhibited by Andrew and Joe Scott, Valley Vista Poll Dorsets, Coolac, while the reserve champion ram was also bred at Valley Vista but paraded by Sally Scott.
Mr Douglas said there were some fantastic rams in the championship line and it was a very tight decision.
“The champion is well balanced, with a great twist and the outlook I’m looking for,” he said. “He has the potential to be a top sire.”
The champion ram had come through the shorn ram class and was a son of the supreme Poll Dorset at the ASSBA Show in Bendigo in 2015, Valley Vista Fyfe.
The champion ewe was also bred by the Scott family at Valley Vista, Coolac, and had come through the wooly ewe class.
Mr Douglas said it was nice to stand back and appreciate the quality of the ewes paraded before him.
“The champion is a good handling ewe with capacity through the loin and a bit more finish than the reserve," he said.
The reserve champion ewe was shown by Scott and Doug Mitchell, Rene, Culcairn, and although she was a long bodied ewe with good handle, Mr Douglas said she didn’t quite have the finish through her loin that the champion ewe showed.
The Bob Ramm Memorial Trophy for champion ram was presented to the Scott family, Valley Vista, Coolac, who also took the breed group of one ram and two ewes, and the Hillden Trophy for champion ewe.
