Buyers from four states helped ease the dispersal of a large yarding of Angus, Hereford and crossbred calves on Friday at Glen Innes where more than 3200 head were offered through Colin Say and Co.
Weaner steers averaging 257 cents a kilogram, reaching a top of 304c/kg and $969. Weaner heifers averaged 185c/kg and made a top price of 203c/kg and $606.
Milk tooth steers averaged 271c/kg and topped at 290c/kg and $1068. Milk tooth heifers averaged 193 and reached a peak of 203c/kg and $574.
Good quality weaned heifers destined for the paddock were in particular demand with buyers from Mt Gambier and Naracoorte, South Australia keen to take a punt on breeders and feeders, hoping their winter season will not be too out of the ordinary.
Heifers also went to Scone, Albury and Benalla. Steers went into Queensland with a few staying local.
The sale-toppers were a pen of 15 milk tooth Angus, 377kg making $1068. The Glencoe-bred steers were bought in October as quiet weaners by David Marchant, Glen Innes, who had planned to grow them out but was caught by the season. For the last month this small producer had been watering his house lawn and collecting clippings for feed.
Sam and Ericka Ulrick, "Springfield" Guyra sold the best weaner steers, Angus with Glen Avon blood, 319kg at 304c/kg going to Bob Jamieson Agencies, Inverell.
Champion pen of Angus steers, 333kg, went to Gordon and Sally Wollen, Red Range, who experienced the driest February on their property since 1955, selling for 270c/kg while another pen of the same, 302kg, sold for 297c/kg with both going to the southern Downs on supplements.
Andrew and Tim Grobb, Shannonvale are running out of water along with feed with cattle living off Love Grass this summer but were pleased with their Angus steers with Dulverton blood, 252kg, making to 184c/kg while their parents Barry and Julie Anne sold the same, 274kg, for $293. Andrew and Tim's heifers, 274kg, sold for 199c/kg while their parents' heifers, 245kg, made 199c/kg and went to restockers at Scone.
Best weaner heifers were Angus with Wattletop and Booroomooka blood, 309kg, produced by the Lockyer family, "Sunny View" Ben Lomond and selling for 196c/kg or $606 going to Albury through Ray White.
Top milk tooth heifers were Angus with Sara Park blood, 297kg produced by Colin and Joy Baker, "Ker-even", Glen Innes, selling for 193c/kg or $574 and going to Ray White Albury.
