Despite tough conditions across the state, Kempsey agents were "pleasantly surprised" to see most classes of cattle sell to rates of up to 30 cents a kilogram above those achieved in other centres last week.

There was a total yarding of 1222 at Kempsey Stock and Land's regular Fat Sale and Market Day on March 14, which featured a second feeder steer and heifer sale for the year.

"It was stronger than we though with top end feeders making good money," agent Laurie Argue said.

A good run of grown steers and bullocks over 400kg saw the best sale to a top of 250.2c/kg, 28 cents dearer in comparison to last fortnight's sale.

Feeder steers up to 400kg topped at 240.2c/kg, a rise of 12 cents on last sale.

The best line of Angus steers, 311kg, make 240.2c/kg.

Preg tested empty feeder heifers sold to 204.2c/kg, for Speckle Park Cross heifers belonging to Lex Coombes, weighing 420kg.

Heavy vealer and weaner heifers were keenly sought after, topping at 242.2c/kg for European cross heifers weighing 340kg, while good quality Angus weaner heifers generally sold from 185c/kg to 222c/kg. Lightweight weaner heifers jumped 15 to 25 cents on last sale, topping at 202.2c/kg.

Cows sold in line with state wide trends, with the best of the heavy cows making 166.2c/kg, while medium weight cows topped at 152.2c/kg. The best bull sold for 192.2c/kg.
