Casino Beef Week once again delivered a fine presentation of led steer and stud cattle, paraded in the centre of town around the historic Mafeking Lamp for a standing-room only crowd on Saturday.
The magnificent Santa Gertrudis bull Yulgilbar Nevada was sashed supreme beef exhibit after catching the eye of Jandowae, Qld judge and Santa breeder David Greenup. The bull was recently crowned supreme Santa exhibit at Sydney Royal.
A Temana Charolais bred by the Nicholls family at Rukenvale, Tookawhile Piccadilly Punch, won junior bull, after claiming the same title at Toowoomba and Allora.
Supreme female ribbon went to the rising three year old Ainskirbeau Miley by Kandu Graduate from a pure French Ainskirbeau Limousin with calf by the black Limousin Graneta Limo, bred by Grant Shedden, Greenridge.
Champion heifer, out of a very competitive top line, went to Alstonville High School with Red Angus Alstonville Jan, by Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P from a Kansas Red Kite through embryo transfer prepared and assisted by agricultural students at the school.
Judge David Greenup described the 17 month old female as maternal with structural femininity.
"I look for performance and frame," said Mr Greenup. "I also look for a female who will produce progeny, who will breed on with high performance and functionality and long life."
Bull under 12 months was won by Dorrigo based Gleanlea Beef with the Charolais Glenlea Poppy by Charnelle Louis while the junior bull 16-20 months was the Braford Big Valley Danny by Sunny Lawn Talisman, produced by Ernie and June Bennett, Casino.
Little Valley Brafords, from Doug and Cameron Bennett, Stratheden, took out the 31 to 36 month old bull class with Little Valley Richard, 950kg, by Little Valley Action.
Champion led steer was awarded to a Charolais/ Angus bred by Troy and Kelly Ward, Guyra. and prepared for show by the Nicholls family, Rukenvale, attracting the top price at auction by the Guyra bowling club at 690c/kg carcase weight.
Holy Trinity School at Inverell won champion school steer with a Limousin 596kg. The students also won reserve school steer and reserve led steer with a Red Angus/Charolais bred by Jasmin Ramage and bought by the high school at the Glen Innes show steer sale.
Lightweight class was won with a Speckle Park/ Angus steer, bought by Tim Bayliss, Dorrigo and prepared for show by Riley Cooke, Stratheden and claimed second highest price at the auction.
Top Beef Week parader was awarded to Georgia Perkins, Corndale, with second placed Chelsea Campbell, Ellangowan, and Taylor Humphries, Mummulgum.
