AT the Australian Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo last week, the Calga Dohne stud of Coonamble privately sold an upcoming sire for $15,000 to Koonik Dohnes, Nurcoung, Victoria.
Koonik's Fiona Cameron said the ram had figures of a yearling weight of 5.3 kilograms, a post weaning eye muscle depth of 0.6 millimetres, a post-weaning fat of 0.1mm and a post weaning clean fleece weight of 13.7 per cent.
"The Koonik stud was founded on Uardry and Macquarie bloodlines in 2008," Ms Cameron said.
"After the Uardry Dohne dispersal, in 2013, Koonik has been looking for a suitable sire of Uardry bloodlines."
Ms Cameron said she believed the new ram was a true, dual-purpose sheep, with a big locked, soft wool, on a great carcase.
"I believe this sire will have a great impact on our Uardry side of the Koonik stud," she said.
Calga studmaster Jason Southwell said the ram has exceptional wool quality for a Dohne, with great muscling and structure.
"He was a ram that was really early maturing, which was the main attraction for the buyers so they could breed a better lamb that they can turn off at quicker rates," Mr Southwell said.
He described the ram as very well balanced.
"We are looking to go down the track of breeding more of these early maturing type lambs," he said.
