WEANERS were in very strong demand at George and Fuhrmann's 1580 head annual blue ribbbon weaner sale in Stanthorpe on Thursday.
Dominated by good quality Angus cattle, the 1034 steers offered attracted very strong competition from feedlot buyers.
The heavier 280kg to 330kg-plus steers generally made 400c/kg to 440c/kg, with the best Angus steers returning $1721.
Don Russell, Warwick Park, Pratten, had the champion pen of 329kg Angus steers, which made 434c/kg to return $1428.
Mediumweights in the 200kg to 280kg range made 410c/kg to 464c/kg. The best Angus steers returned $1429.
Lightweights up to 200kg topped 544c/kg, with the best returning $1040.
The 559 heifers were in particular demand, both from feeders and restockers.
Sale toppers at 444c/kg on a cents a kilo basis were a lightweight pen of 163kg Angus offered by the Ryan family. Other lightweight Angus heifers returned up to $839.
The champion pen of heifers came from Rod and Glenda Reeves, Rodglen, Amosfield. The 327kg pen sold for 420c/kg Mike Benn, Berrington Cattle Co, and will be used as replacement breeders.
Heifers in 200kg to 280kg range made 360c/kg to 434c/kg, while the 280kg to 330kg run made 360c/kg to 426c/kg.
George and Fuhrmann's weaner sales continue in Casino on Thursday and Friday next week, with about 6000 head expected to be yarded.
