Restocker demand drives up prices for lighter steers.

There were 1225 good quality cattle yarded at the Wodonga saleyards on Thursday.

Feeder steers sold to cheaper prices but restocker demand still drove lighter cattle upwards of 400c/kg.

Landmark Paull Scollard agent Tim Robinson said heavier steers still sold solidly, most making 370-385c/kg.

"There were only a few smaller lines of feeder steers in the sale," Mr Robinson said.

"The feeder job in general is probably showing signs it may of peaked in the short term but everyone's just taking things daily and weekly at the moment."

While, lighter-weight cattle, suited to go back onto grass were every bit as dear if not dearer than recent sales.

"There were sales well in excess of 400c/kg, getting up to the high 400s and even touching that 500c/kg mark," Mr Robinson said.

He said restocker confidence would have risen with widespread rain across NSW and northern Victoria in recent days.

"A lot of places are very under stocked and growing quite a bit of feed, they're trying to grab hold of some stock to get themselves back in the game," Mr Robinson said.

Noonbah, Holbrook topped the sale with their pen of 11 Angus steers, weighing 454kg making $1700/hd.

BJ and ML Schultz, Mulwala sold a line of Angus steers, the top pen weighing 450kg, made $1670/hd.

P McCabe, Tangambalanga, Victoria sold 14 Angus steers, weighing an average of 425kg for $1585/hd.

Account Pendergast, Benambra, Vic sold 24 Hereford steers weighing 344kg for $1475/hd.

Mr Robinson said the heifers followed the same trends as the steers.

"Lighter heifers were exceptionally dear from very solid, grass-driven northern orders, the feeders operated on the heavier end," Mr Robinson said.

Account P and K Davenport, Londrigan, Vic sold 18 Angus heifers, weighing 436kg for $1580/hd.

E and G Martin, Lucyvale, Vic sold 11 Simmental cross heifers, weighing 355kg for $1360/hd.

There were a very small number of cows and calves on offer, the tops making $1420/unit.

The sale was conducted by Paull and Scollard Landmark and Elders Wodonga.
