There were only 1179 head yarded at Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange, Wodonga, last Thursday, but the quality was very good with many pens of steers in good store condition on offer.
Reflecting the excellent seasonal conditions across north-east Victoria and the Riverina, local restockers were determined to fill their requirements as were the regular commission buyers.
Corcoran Parker director Kevin Corcoran, Wodonga, quoted the market as "very firm". "It was surprisingly strong," he said. "I would think it was $20 to $30 dearer in some places especially for the better pens of steers over 300kg.
"There was good quality throughout which was reflected in the keen demand."
Results for steers over 300kg ranged from $1355 to $1585, while the better pens under 300kg sold from $1010 to $1330 and heavy steers over 400kg sold from $1445 to $1810.
Indicative results for steers included nine Herefords weighing 353kg sold for $1345 by Woodlea Gully, Mansfield, Victoria: 11 Table Top-blood Angus, nine to 10 months and weighing 351kg sold by Tyson Blacker, Bungowannah, and 38 Angus, weighing 389 sold by J Lee, Wodonga, for $1570.

In the heifer pens, those over 300kg sold from $1060 to $1425, while the better pens under 300kg sold from $950 to $1040.
Indicative results included 12 Table Top-blood Angus heifers weighing 324kg sold by Tyson Blacker, Bungowannah, and 20 Angus weighing 255kg sold by Clive March, Tocumwal for $1060.
