THE market for store cattle in the Hunter continued its recent strong trend as cows with calves sold to a top of $3000 during the Maitland store cattle sale last Saturday.
Bowe and Lidbury agent Rodney McDonald, Maitland, said there was strong buying support from the local area and the Upper Hunter on the 650 cattle offered.
Some categories of stock were about $100 a head dearer than recent sales.
Weaner steers sold from $800 to $1440 (average $1180), while weaner heifers made $700 to $1600.
Yearling steers attracted bids from $1500 to $1680 and grown steers made $1500 to $1760.
Pregnancy-tested-in-calf females attracted solid demand - the heifers sold from $1800 to $1850, while the cows made $1400 to $1900.
Joined cows sold from $1400 to $1700, while unjoined females ranged from $1500 to $1550.
Cows with calves sold from $1700 to $3000 and averaged $2350.
The top pen of cows with calves were Charolais from the Myers family at Gosforth.
Frank Hunter, Yarramalong, sold Angus cows with calves for $2950 to Bryce Whale, Glen William, and AJ and SM Doyle, Central Coast, sold PTIC Angus cows for $1900 to John Unicomb, Largs.
VE Miller, Wallarobba, sold 10- to 12-month-old Angus weaner heifers for $1420, while Tarjan Country Holdings, Chads Creek, sold a good line of 10-month-old Angus weaner steers for $1400 and heifers for $1380.
The sale was conducted by Bowe and Lidbury, Maitland.
