Former NSW Police Minister and Deputy Premier Troy Grant has been appointed as the new Interim Inspector-General of Water Compliance (IIGWC) for the Murray-Darling Basin.

Mr Grant will replace former Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty who served in a similar role, Interim Inspector-General of the Murray Darling Basin Water Resources, for a year and undertook three investigations during his term.
Mr Keelty was appointed to the position by former federal Water Minister David Littleproud and he carried out a much-anticipated inquiry into the impact of reduced inflows to the southern basin.
The new appointment was made by current federal Water Minister Keith Pitt, who said Mr Grant would bring a great depth of experience to the role, including 22 years serving in the NSW Police Force, including as an inspector in the area of major crime investigations.
"Mr Grant's strong leadership skills have been honed throughout his career as a former member of parliament and as Deputy Premier of NSW, where his portfolios included Justice, Police, Emergency Services and Natural Resources," Mr Pitt said.
"In 2012, he was awarded the National Police medal in recognition of his commitment to ethical and diligent service."
Mr Grant is a former leader of the Nationals party and served as Dubbo MP for eight years, retiring from politics last year.
The establishment of the statutory Inspector-General of Water Compliance position and the movement of compliance functions out of the MDBA is due to commence in July 2021 pending successful passage of the supporting legislation.
"The IIGWC role will ensure strong accountability and compliance with the Water Act and the Basin Plan. This will instill greater confidence in local communities and stakeholders in the integrity of water management," Mr Pitt said.
