A change in consumer spending in the wake of Covid-19 along with an oversupply of product has resulted in prices for high quality gritting corn falling by almost half in the last few months.
Corn planted on the Northern New England and over the Queensland border on the Darling Downs and the Burdekin has yielded well and those crops without a contract for delivery now have nowhere to go.
There are reports from those in the industry that thousands of tonnes of gritting corn are now trying to find a buyer.
Grain trader John Webster, Quirindi, said flour mills normally in the trade weren't buying at the moment.
Corn processor Ross Larsson, Mara Global Foods at Mallanganee said consumer spending habits in the wake of the pandemic were behind the slowing of snack food sales.
