When Bega Valley Eggs lost more than two-thirds of their 3000 chickens to last year's fires, only four months into the McMillan family's tenure, they did not despair.
Instead, they created a fundraiser which received outstanding support.
Immediately after the fires, Tom and Joscelin McMillan had no power and had used all available water protecting the farms.
Everything the remaining 1000 chickens were producing went into compost until they could get generators and fridges in place.
For the next three months, Bega Valley Eggs operated well under capacity before COVID-19 panic buying saw them unable to fill orders.
A year on and Bega Valley Eggs are growing from strength-to-strength.
"We received great support from the fundraiser which has really helped us get back on our feet and move forward," Joscelin said.
"We went from down under a flock of 1000 Highline Browns to replacing 3000 in six weeks thanks to help from our supplier.
"This usually takes six months. We now have a flock size of 7000."
While none of the buildings on the McMillan's farms were harmed, they did receive extensive damage to fencing on the two properties.
The fences have been replaced and the fundraiser has also helped them move their operation onto one farm.
"Funds from the fundraiser has helped us build a grading room and move onto one farm," Joscelin said.
"This room is also where we wash, pack and store the eggs.
"We are also designing new sheds, changing our systems to make them less labour intensive and more efficient.
"We still rotate the chickens through pastures, but will not need to spend as much time in the sheds.
"We are continuing to grow but as things stand we are at capacity."
