TIPPING the scales at a whopping 1212 kilograms the heaviest bull on grounds, Round-Em-Up The Night P012, has ruled the Red Angus ring taking out supreme exhibit of the breed.
Exhibited by David and Ashleigh Hobbs and family of Round-Em-Up Red Angus, Molong, the grand champion bull was sired by breed legend RRA The Night and out of Round-Em-Up Vera K013.
"Power, performance, efficiency and explosive muscle through the hind quarter" were words used by judge Erica Halliday of Ben Nevis Angus, Walcha, to describe the 30-month-old senior champion that was unstoppable during the show.
"This bull offers extra performance, he is a bull that you can tell is efficient, balanced and is hard to fault," Mrs Halliday said.
"He structurally correct, wide, long, has strength of spring and the overall muscle depth, extra depth of rib and the overall package that he offers with a masculine head, neck and muzzle has got him on top."
Combining an interesting mix of old school genetics with reasonable new genetics, the stand-out sire already has calves on the ground.
"He has the cow king in Indeed, the carcase and maternal side in Canyon, and RRA The Knight just keeps doing it," Mr Hobbs said.
"The bull was used in the Moorwatha herd with calves due early August... we have half a dozen on the ground.
"We also have full embryo brothers (to The Night P012) on the ground, with more siblings to come."
Already making headways within the breed internationally, semen from The Night P012 has been picked up by North American breeders.
"Six Mile have the Canadian semen rights, and Lodoen Cattle Company (L83 Ranch) have the US rights," he said. "We will be marketing semen here."
Packing over 1200kg of beef, he measured 140 square centimetre eye muscle area (EMA) and rump and rib fat measurements of 29 millimetres and 16mm.
He will now head to Beef Australia 2021 at Rockhampton, Qld.
The Night P12 overcame the junior and grand champion female in Mellowood 1B Queen Rose, exhibited by the Knee family of Mellowood Red Angus, Loomberah, for the top title.
Sired by Red Double B Bullseye 1B and out of GK Red 26 Rose, she was a rising 17-month-old and won the biggest class of the day.
Judge Mrs Halliday commented she was a donor in the making, and that she is with The Knee family hoping to flush her at a later date.
"She has the combination of natural thickness and correctness that I was looking for," Mrs Halliday said.
"I'm delighted by the junior female, she is just stunning, oozes quality, has that mid-maturity pattern and she is the type of female that we like to breed."
The Knees said they purchased her dam who is a fully imported embryo from Canada from GK Livestock as a bred heifer.
"She was the best Red Angus exhibit at both the Barraba and Glen Innes shows, and at Glen she was reserve champion junior heifer in the heifer show," the Knees said.
It was the third time the Knee family had entered Sydney, but this year was their biggest team with the stud successfully displaying six head.
Mellowood also exhibited the senior champion female, GK Red Bella MB N36 that showed with two-month-old bull calf at foot Mellowood 2P Red Sniper S03 sired by Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P, and reserve senior champion bull Mellowood 3A Mr Q.
Christie Fuller, Diamond Red Angus, Cowra, holding the junior champion Red Angus bull being sashed by RAS councillor Brian Wilson.
Cowra based Diamond stud claimed junior champion bull with Diamond Red Revolver, a son of Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P out of Goondoola Miss D G02. and reserve junior champion female with Diamond Miss Quiteacatch Q503, a daughter of Red Cockburn Assassin 624D out of GK Red Ruba 21 L09.
Diamond Red Angus also won the Red Angus breeder's group, while Mellowood won the pair of bulls and sire's progeny group.
Reserve senior champion female was presented to Redgums Rosie exhibited by first time Sydney entrants Hanna Wade and Brodie Kelly of Kelly's Creek Livestock, Kurrajong.
Numbers may have been back in the Red Angus breed, with 15 head from five exhibitors on display, but they continually impressed judge Mrs Halliday for the consistent high quality they displayed.
