A Canadian embryo bred bull with just one show under his belt went straight to the top of a very competitive Speckle Park judging at Sydney on Friday.
Pemberton Thunderbolt Q65 from Taleah Bell, Glenquarry was declared the junior and grand champion bull before overpowering a multi-royal champion in Hanging Rock Heather P01 and her seven-month-old calf, Hanging Rock Hyacinth, exhibited by Hanging Rock Speckle Park stud, Victoria.
Judge Peter Falls from Finley was excited to be given the honour of looking over the growing breed that was due to run a feature show at the event but it was cancelled due to COVID-19 disruptions.
"I'd just like to say how excited I've been to judge the Speckle Park here today and pleased to be involved in it because those of you who have been studying and watching these cattle would realise the potential in the cattle that have got the ability here to carry the beef industry forward," he said.
"We saw a number of classes with not only one good exhibit but a number of good exhibits and we come to the time when we have to select just one and there is probably only one problem with this class and it's that I don't own them."
The 17-month-old junior and grand champion bull was by Outback Joey 25D and out of Notta 101Y Photo Finish 12A and boasted a 1.45kg daily gain, 12 and eight fats and 114 square centimetre eye muscle area. He weighed 758 kilograms.
"You can see him out with a big mob of cows and just see him come across the paddock with sire appeal and ability and they are the things you can't measure but you can see in him" Mr Falls said.
Speaking on behalf of his daughter, Tim Bell said the bull had taken out the British bull title at Moss Vale Show recently but he hadn't been anywhere else.
"We will probably retain him and take him on to Melbourne, see if we can back it up," he said.
The thickness, femininity and smoothness through the shoulder were key traits admired in the senior and grand champion female who may have enjoyed her last show before heading back out to the breeding paddock.
Hanging Rock Heather P01 was a three-year-old daughter of Fish Creek Farm Thunderstruck L1 and out of AAA Lavender L28 with her first calf boasting the sire genetics of Maungahina Northern Star.
She was no stranger to success having won grand champion at Adelaide in 2019 and supreme exhibit of Melbourne. Her sire was also a supreme exhibit of Melbourne while her dam took the title in 2018.
Owner John Ellis said they ran about 20 breeders and she had been an extraordinary pleasure to own.
"The reason that we are in the show system is because when you are a small breeder like we are it's the best form of marketing and to win and to win consistently is brilliant marketing so mission accomplished," he said.
"It's also a huge thrill and to win in Sydney is the stuff dreams are made of."
In other major results Jack Nelson from Pine Lodge in Victoria exhibited the junior champion female, the 19-month-old Jackungah Koda Q17 ahead of the reserve Epic Amy's Girl R8 from S E Carrison and M K Woollett, Penola, South Australia.
The senior champion bull from Alex Pateman and Natalie Merz, Rose Hill stud, Kandos, in Rose Hill Secret's Out while the reserve was Hillview Cliff from Robert and Leanne Bendeich from Hillview Speckle Park, Leconfield.
