SUNSHINE beamed down on the judging ring at the 57th annual Herefords Australia Dubbo Poll Hereford National judged outside the big shed for the first time in close to 20 years when 97 bulls paraded for judge, David Smith, livestock manager, Palgrove Charolais, Ben Lomond, on Monday, June 4.
Lachdale stud’s single-entry debut re-wrote the fixture’s record book when studmaster, Lachie Scurr, Texas, Queensland, paraded Lachdale Mindblower M003 (P), to take out junior and grand champion awards.
The 21-month-old son of Kidman Outlook F54 (P) from Lachdale Matchless E01,a daughter of Mr Scurr’s foundation stud female, Tahlan Matchless B32, weighed 974 kilograms and displayed a 134 square centimetre eye muscle area (EMA) when earlier awarded junior championship after winning one of four junior classes totalling 35 bulls.
Mr Smith said he felt the grand champion would do the industry a great lot of good as a stud sire.
“I’m really pleased with this young bull. He’s only a September calf weighing 970-plus kilos and that’s about all the performance you probably need in your cattle today,” he said.
“He’s got that little bit of X factor about him with that natural thickness and structural soundness. A big strong head and I admire his thickness which I have been looking for all day and this guy’s got it in spades.
“You couldn’t ask for a much better animal of any breed.”
Intermediate section broad ribbon winners were a “daily-double” for Ben and Leanne Rumbel, Supple stud, Ben Lomond, who paraded Supple Mally M077 to gain championship and Supple Meteor M171 the reserve.
Mally had won the oldest of four classes of 32 bulls while Meteor had won the first of this section.
Supple Mally M077, a son of Morganvale Educator is from the Bowen Blenhiem B198 sired Lindendale Dinah 16 and was rising 24 months weighing 914kg with an EMA of 130 sqcm.
Mr Smith said Mally carried himself well and was very structurally sound.
“I love the length on him and the way he gets about, he’s got style and is a worthy champion,” he said.
