It doesn’t take a lot to draw dedicated Merino breeders together and discuss the latest genetic attempts at lifting production across the board: and the 72nd Great Southern Supreme Merino show and sale in Canberra was once again the venue for friends and rival breeders to gather and swap anecdotes.
It is the first show of the calendar year, and it gives each studmaster a chance to consider their options leading up to the shows later in the year.
Numbers in the show pens were on par with last year, with a couple of new entrants putting their sheep forward.
Veteran sheep breeder, Robert Harding studmaster of the Glendonald stud, Nhill, Victoria bought a team of August-shorn sheep and was successful being awarded the August-shorn championship for the medium/strong wool section.
He has now shown in every state in the country, winning broad ribbons at all the major shows along with supreme exhibit in four states and a national supreme.
He has also won the national pairs four times.
