IT MAY have been a smaller yarding than organisers had hoped for but the quality of the 500 weaner steers and heifers offered was exceptional at the 25th Annual Coal Country Angus Sale at the Hunter Regional Livestock Exchange in Singleton.
The Angus weaner heifers and steers were offered by 10 local producers, but lot feeders dominated the market during the sale last Friday.
The competition between sale sponsor Killara Feedlot and other commercial buyers, as well as plenty of heavier weaners, meant prices rose from Singleton's last store sale earlier in the month.

Roger Fuller Pty Ltd principal Roger Fuller, Singleton, said majority of the cattle were bought by local commercial cattle enterprises.
"Killara Feedlot were the major sponsors of the event and were also one of our major buyers along with the commission buyers here in the Hunter Valley, which took up the rest of the cattle," Mr Fuller said.
"Only a couple of pens went to local restockers on the day.
"Overall. it was a great sale with great cattle and hopefully we can do it all again next year with even bigger numbers."
Heroic Pastoral Company, Ellerston, topped the weaner steer market at 530 cents a kilogram, while Jim and Ian Searles, Branxton, Lower Belford, topped the heifer market at 500c/kg.
Roger Fuller Pty Ltd stock agent Jason Bower, Singleton, said "the steers were an exceptional, quality line up" and they averaged over $1700 a head.
He said the weaner heifers averaged just under $1500.
"The cheapest weaner heifers still made $1280, while the lighter steers went for $1460," Mr Bower said.
"Most of the purchasers have supported this sale throughout it's 25-year history, so it was good to see this year was no different."
Mr Bower said the weights of the weaners on offer had helped the market strengthen on previous sales.
"The market was strong given the heavy weights of these weaners," he said.
"A large portion of the weaners weighed better than 350kg and topped over 430kg."
The sale was conducted by Roger Fuller Pty Ltd of Singleton.
