Mr McDonald said this was mainly market driven with a recent sale of calves resulting in a $200 a head difference in black Angus calves compared to the crossbred draft.
"The figures were there with the two bulls we bought and the top lot 3 bull will go to our cows, while the lot 27 (Coolie Frannklin R51) will go to younger heifers," he said.
Coolie Frannklin R51 was a 18-month-old son of Coolie N37 out of Coolie H1 that weighed 710kg and was ranked in the top 5pc for all growth traits, carcase weight and scrotal circumference, and top 10pc for the Angus Breeding and Heavy Grain Indexes.
Averaging $20,500 across the two selections, Blackjack Pastoral Company also purchased the top-priced bull at the Knowla Livestock Sale a few weeks ago.
A full flush sibling to the top-priced bull, Coolie Payweight Q136, was picked up for the second top price of $18,000 by local operators Colly Creek Pastoral at Willow Tree who were underbidders of the top-bull.
Running around 700 Angus breeders, Colly Creek Pastoral manager Nick Brien said they produce calves that are finished in their own Plainview feedlot before processing, with meat on the menu at the Willow Tree pub.
Also new buyers at Coolie Angus, Mr Brien selected five bulls for a $15,200 average.
"They're top quality bulls that are complete and suit our operation," he said. "They have great temperament and are all round great bulls."
Local buyers mainly featured in the list of successful purchasers, however some came from further afield including an operation at Goondiwindi, Qld and another at Dirranbandi, Qld.
The sale was conducted by Davidson Cameron and Co with guest auctioneer Paul Dooley taking bids.
